How was the Egg Module Created?
Egg Module originated in March of 2008 when Paul Helgeson began create a strategy to combine his ambition to help communities in the developing world with his experience growing up in the poultry industry. Paul is the fourth generation working for his family’s company, Gold’n Plump, a poultry production business operating in central Minnesota. He is currently serving as Gold’n Plump’s Sustainability Manager.
An avid traveler, Paul has journeyed to 35 countries spanning 5 continents. While working toward his MBA at Carlson School of Management, he studied for a semester at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. These international experiences instilled Paul with an appreciation of how different businesses operate across the globe and allowed him to begin developing his ability to reach across cultures.
In late 2009, Paul traveled to Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya and witness current egg modules (link to Current Egg Modules) in action. Throughout his stay, Paul conversed with many people from a variety of different backgrounds. He gathered from this experience that there are plenty of opportunities for more egg modules and other micro-financed businesses to flourish and become sustainable.
Building Meaningful Relationship and Partnerships
Over the past couple of years, Paul has worked tirelessly to develop relationships with donor organizations and potential communities and groups in which to house egg farms. By partnering with groups like Positive Planet and The Lord of Life Lutheran Church located in Maple Grove, Minnesota, we have been able to provide the resources necessary for starting successful egg production businesses in Eastern Africa.
